Our President of Rugby, John Archer, has died.

Neil Gillan29 Nov - 18:55

It is with tremendous sorrow that I have to announce the sudden death at home of our President of Rugby, John Archer. John died in his sleep aged 86.

Our sincerest condolences go out to Maria, Stephen, Judith and Helen, also to his grandchildren (and players at the club) Danny, Joe and Charlie, and to John’s other grandchildren and extended family. John was involved with the club for almost 70 years. Latterly he was President of Rugby in two stints covering more than 15 years. His current period of office starting in 2015. He has had various roles on the club committee and was integral to the formation of the Sports Club, when Cleckheaton Cricket & Bowling Club, merged with Cleckheaton Rugby Club in the early 70’s. He was our 1st Team Captain for 3 seasons, 1964/65, 1965/66 and 1967/68. He also played cricket and bowls for the club. We will post a photo montage of John and some reminisces in due course.

John’s funeral will take place at Parkwood Crematorium, Elland, two weeks today on Friday 13th December at 12:45pm, followed by a celebration of John’s life at the club from 2pm onwards. All attendees are encouraged to feature some red and white somewhere amongst their attire or accessories and Cleckheaton RUFC blazers, shirts and ties would be appreciated for those that have them. Donations are welcome instead of flowers with the money going towards promoting new junior sporting opportunities at the club.
